AT THE SCENE CHECKLIST: Call 911 immediately. Get police and First Responders on site ASAP. Do not move the injured cyclist unless it is absolutely necessary for their safety. Do NOT remove their helmet.Cover them/comfort them/call their loved ones/tell them help is on the way. Keep them still.Stay calm and provide them assurance and support.If the cyclist is trying to get up or get back on their bike, move them to the side of the road or a safe place and get them to sit or lie down. (Often adrenaline takes over and the cyclist has no idea how badly injured they are). Take photos/videos/document everything ASAP before it is moved. Truly. Don’t be shy on this.The scene will never look that way again. Photograph the cyclist, their bike, the car, the driver, license plates, witnesses, the scene, get witness names/contact information.Make sure the driver does not leave if you can but to be safe -take photos of them, their car, their license plate! If the cyclist is taken by ambulance away from the scene to the ER, make sure the police have the cyclist’s name and infomation so that the cyclist can provide their statement later on. The involved cyclist and their riding mates should not interact or speak with the driver. If you witnessed the crash make sure you give your name and statement to police.
